CAUTION: COMIC BOOK CONSTRUCTION!

Here's a cool project I'm currently enjoying:

Film & stage director/ haunted house designer/ writer & artist DEAN CALUSDIAN asked me to ink & letter a comic book he is writing & illustrating. Tentatively titled "A Very Zombie Christmas", it's a Rankin-Bass Christmas special gone insane!

Below is one of Dean's unfinished penciled pages: 

Dean also emails me a script for each page like below:

I take Dean's finished page and copy it as a single color at Kinko's, so it's entirely non-reproducible blue...that way I can ink right over his pencils without ruining his amazing original penciled artwork (I could also ink with a lightbox at this stage, but I prefer this method): 

Then I ink over the blue with my rapidograph and scan it into Photoshop:

In Photoshop, I use the brush tool & the fill tool to add some grays and some highlights. It's going to be a black & white comic book:

And lastly, I add the text and the word balloons to create a finished page:

I'll post more pages in the future, there's some twisted action sequences ahead!

FUN FALL BOOKS illustrated by ME:

There's two great kids books coming out this fall and I was happy to be a part of both! The two books are very different, but both books offered a great experience for this illustrator. Gibbs Smith's BART'S KING-SIZED BOOK OF FUN by the amazing Bart King is filled with fun & crazy things to do and I got to add some wild & wacky illustrations! Teacher Created Material's WHEELS ON THE BUS is an illustrated retelling of the classic song we all grew up with and I enjoyed producing some simple & sweet illustrations for that book!
