A client who I've illustrated many children's books for ask me to come up with a different style for a series of adult employment guides. So, below are the cover designs I created for their books on CHANGING CAREERS, the PERFECT RESUME and CAREER ADVANCEMENT.
The next book was on JOB SEARCHING and below are the two final sketches they liked.
And below is the final cover design for the CAREER SEACHING guide created completely in Photoshop. Very different look for me, but I enjoyed the challenge!

I'm really enjoying your posts Chris. You did a great job on this cover drawing. I would think that it isn't very easy to change your style.
Thanks for the comment, David! I know you're currently changing the way you colorize your artwork, so you can relate to changing styles. To make a living freelancing I have to be versatile and I do enjoy the opportunity to go out of my comfort zone every once in a while.
Hello hello! I stumbled on your blog via another illustrator I follow!
And you're right, changing styles isn't easy. I'm exploring different styles myself, but on my blog I stick to one style and add a random post with a different style every now and then, just to get some feedback. But it takes time to practice a lot and my thesis needs to be finished ASAP! Seriously -_-'.
I really like your blog! Awesome work!
You did a great job on this Chris. I am always puzzled, though, when art directors/editors want to see a "new" style from an artist they like. Aren't they hiring you for the style you already have?
TJ, Thanks so much for stopping by and the kind comments! I checked out your blog too and have some wonderful work there, so much cool stuff to enjoy!
Thanks, Bill! I think sometimes (not always) art directors will go with an artist they have a good working relationship with instead of searching for one that is perfect for the assignment. I know the first book cover I did for this series had a very short deadline and I think the art director didn't want to take a chance with an artist they didn't know with such a tight timeline. And as someone that has a family, mortgage and a very hungry cat, I was very happy the art director thought of me!!!
Great stuff. It's probably a good exercise to draw in a different style now and then just to shake things up a bit.
It seems that my creativity is often based on routine actions, such as always starting a drawing pretty much the same way, or using similar body types, expressions, poses etc.
You did a nice job here Chris.
Love the "Sherlock Holmes" character!
